Schools across the UK will close “until further notice” from Friday.
GCSEs and A-level exams have been scrapped.
Boris Johnson said the Government would try to keep the duration of school closures to an “absolute minimum” and intended to “get things going again as fast as we can”.
The UK’s death toll hit 104 today with 2,626 confirmed cases.
Chancellor Angela Merkel urged all German citizens to help fight the spread of the coronavirus by sticking to rules aimed at reducing direct social contact and avoiding as many new infections as possible.
“It is serious. Take it seriously,” Merkel said in a televised speech.
“Since German reunification, actually, since World War Two, there has never been a challenge for our country in which acting in solidarity was so very crucial.”
Donald Trump announced the closure of the border between the United States and Canada to all but “essential traffic” in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus.
“We will be, by mutual consent, temporarily closing our Northern Border with Canada to non-essential traffic,” Trump said.
“Trade will not be affected.”
